NAMIBIA - ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK

Etosha - Namibia's oldest national park. Proclaimed in 1907, and celebrated it's 100 years during 2007.

The park is 2,500 miles Etosha pan, was originallly a lake that dried up millions of years ago. The park stretches more than 180 miles from west to ease and covers an area of 14,000 miles. 

Etosha  boasts 114 mammal species including the black rhino, elephant, lion , leopard giraffe, hyena, eland,sable and roan antelope. Plains game such as springbok,oryx, zebra,wildebeest, and impala. The black faced impala is endemic to Namibia. There are more than 380 bird species, 110 reptile species, 16 amphibians and one fish species. The park is also home to 800 different plant species - ranging from Mopane woodlands dominating the west, to sweet grassveld edging the pan and the Tamboti Terminalia foresst in the east. 

When the park was proclaimed as Game Reserve in 1907, there were no elephant, black or white rhino or lion in the park.

Lion returned in 1912 , rhino gradually returned and the elephant reappeared again in 1946. There are now 2,500 elephant. 

The park originally measured about 54,000 miles and was the largest nature reserve in the world. Several boundary changes took place and in 1958 the area covers 14,000 miles.
