MODENA AND SASSUOLO

LUCIANO  PAVAROTTI

No doubt Pavarotti was the most well known international opera  celebrity tenor.

He died in 2007 at the age of 71. He was one of the Three Tenors - Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras.
He was even made an "honorary Texan", no doubt his proudest achievement.

He has four daughters. Three by his marriage to his first wife. And one with his wife who was 35 years his junior.

MODENA'S CATHEDRAL

In 1999 UNESCO declared it one of Humanity's Cultural Heritage Sites.
Construction began in 1099. Consecreated by Pope Lucius III in 1184, the Cathedral is a masterpiece of the European Romanesque.
The sculptural carvings of the facade by Wiligelmus are unique. The cathedal's crypt houses the tomb of Modena's patron saint, Geminianus.
The Ghirlandina Tower was finished by 1169 and is 285 feet high.

DUCAL PALACE

The palace housed the Este Court for more than two centures and today the headquarters of the Italian Miliary Academy. Construction began in 1634.

ALBINELLI HISTORICAL MARKET

The market was opened on October 28,1931.
During the construction of the market, attention to detail was important. The elegant iron scrolls that connect the pillars, as well as the beautiful fountain of the "little girl with a basket of flowers" by the sculptor and painter Giuseppe Graziosi.

PALAZZO DUCALE DI SASSUOLO

The current appearance of the palace dates back
to 1634 when the ancient and massive castle was transformed into the Ducal residence. Some of the most important painters of "quadrerie" from Bologna were chosen to paint the palace. The Palace complex, including the Cappella Palatina dedicated to San Francesco and the magnificent Peschiera,
saw the presence of Roman architect Bartolomeo Avanzini, inspired the structural and decorative renovation of baroque style by Gian Lorenzo Bernini,
as well as famous scenographers such as Vigarani who also worked in the court of Louis XIV.
