ARKANSAS - THE NATURAL STATE

ROAD TRIP ...ROAD TRIP.....ROAD TRIP

My girlfriend, Karen flew from Durham, N.C. to Dallas, and we set out on a road trip to Arkansas.

We had a plan to visit the state and see all of the tourist attractions.

We left Dallas headed for Hot Springs - our first stop.

On the way we stopped in Hope, Arkansas (population 10,000) to see the birthplace of William Jefferson Clinton - the 42nd President of the U.S.
William Jefferson Blythe III was born August, 1946.
Bill Clinton lived with his grandparents and his mother in this home.
His father died 3 months before Bill was born. In 1950, his mother married Roger Clinton. She had a son, Roger Clinton, Jr. who was his 1/2 brother. Roger is 10 years younger than Bill.Bill changed his name to Clinton when he was 16.
Bill won a "pretty baby" contest when he was two years old.

Bill graduated from Georgetown University in 1968; he attended Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship; graduated Yale Law School; He met Hillary Rodham at the Yale Law School library, and married her in 1975. Chelsea, their only child was born in 1980.

HOT SPRINGS ARKANSAS

Hot Springs (population 35,000) is a year-round health and pleasure resort adjacent to Hot Springs National Park.

The area is a volcanic region. The water is heated by a different process. As the water percolates downward, increasingly warmer rock heats it at a rate of 4 degrees every 300 feet.

The bathhouses opened in 1877. By 1921 the Hot Springs Reservation had become popular with vacationers and health remedy seekers. Monumental bathhouses built along Bathhouse Row about that time catered to crowds of health-seekers.

By the 1960's traditional bathing was in decline and the bathhouses began to close their doors. Unused , the buildings fell into disrepair. By 1985 only the Buckstaff remained open. In the 1980's the National Park Service began exploring ways to return Bathhouse Row to the splendor, if not the function , of their heyday.
The Quapaw Baths reopened, and the Bathhouse row National Historic Landmark in downtown Hot Springs.

In 1915 reviews proclaimed the Fordyce Bathhouse the best in Hot Springs. In 1989 the Fordyce, closed and then in 1962, reopened as the park visitor center and museum.

GARVAN WOODLAND GARDENS

This 210 acre botanical garaden features more than 5 miles of walking trails that provide visitors access to a variety of plant collections, flower borders, rock and antique rose gardens, waterfalls, pools and a bird sanctuary.

Anthony Chapel

Outside the main garden area, visitors may experience world-renowned Anthony Chapel, designed by architects Maurice Jennings and David McKee.
The chapel features soaring columns and fan vaulting of southern  yellow pine.
A complex truss system mimics the branches of surrounding trees as it allows the use of light, structural members, making the 60 - foot high roof seem to be a part of the trees.

The sconces of oak and yellow art glass, and 55 - foot tall glass windows and oversize skylights offer uninterrupted views of the surrounding woodlands.
