SOUTH AMERICAN ADVENTURE
URUGUAY
The Republic of Uruguay is the smallest independent South American Country. It is on the east coast facing the South Atlantic Ocean. Brazil to the North (1/45) the size; Argentina to the West and South (1/15) the size. It is a small population of 3.0 Million and 1.5 million live in Montevideo . Named by the Spanish, which translated means “I see a hill.” There is a colonial part of the city, build in 1790,
This is the gate that separates the old city from the new city.
Plaza Constitucion close to the docks, nearby the old port market building. It has lost none of its charm and has been converted into shops and restaurants.
The Plaza Independencia with the the Palacio Salvo in the center - first high building - which is is 6 stories high.
The US embassy
The large estuary of the Rio de la Plata in the south. It is a large body of water that looks like an Ocean.
There are no large mineral resources in the country. The country is a Republic, basically a firm middle class, and has Argentina and Brazil tourists. The Portuguese were the first to discover Brazil, after which the Spanish arrived and killed all of the indigenous population - the Charrua tribe.
The biggest import from Uruguay is beef,cheese,milk and lamb. Argentina and Brazil are the largest trading partners.
The tango and the Candombe from the 1800’s is the traditional dance. Barrel shaped drums, a guitar player, 2 singers, and a dancing routine.
The Uruguayans claim that they invented the tango, and the Argentinian’s claim also , with Carlos Gardel. Gardel ‘s birth is either in France or Uruguay? But he moved to Buenos Aires at age 6. It was there his melancholy ballads created the Tango.
FAMOUS ARTISTS OF BRAZIL
Joaquin Torres Garcia, born in Montevideo (1874-1949)
He started his career by making wooden toys for children. The art form most associated with his name is Constructivism. Which is a form of abstract art using signs and symbols and a variety of materials.
CARLOS PAEZ VILARO
He is particularly well known for the mural he completed in 1960 in the tunnel connections the two builds of the Pan American Union in Washington,DC. He has an extraordinary Spanish-Moroccan house he has built on a cliff at Punta Ballena near Punta del Este. (1923-2014)
PABLO ATCHUGARRY
Sculpture artist who was born in Uruguay. He has a famous foundation in Mantiales which is along the area of the coastal towns. He uses white Carrara marble , grey Bardinler, and Pink marble from Portugal. (1954- )He has galleries in New York and Miami.
THE WINE DISTRICT OF URUGUAY
The use of concrete vats for the white wines was unique.
Uruguay is one of the most significant countries in the Latin American wine industry. Its location in the same latitude as Argentina,Chile, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand and warm weather are beneficial for healthy vine development.
Of the 19 regions within Uruguay , 15 have vineyards,producing more than 90 million liters of wine from 9,000 vineyard hectares. In Uruguay, the predominant red grape plantings are Tannat,Merlot,Cabernet, Pinot Noir and Malbec. The white grape plantings are AlbariƱo,Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Semillon, and Riesling.

Francis Mallmann is from Garzon and has one of the most significant restaurant in Uruguay. Gorgeous setting...wonderful meal.
PUNTA DEL ESTE - JOSE IGNACIO
This is the province where Jose Ignacio is located....

Punta del Este is recognized worldwide for its beaches and fabulous energy during the summer season. The charming town of Jose Ignacio offers a variety of choices either at the beach or in the inside of Uruguay, where one can take advantage of all four seasons.
Isla de Lobos
5 miles off the coast of Punta del Este. There is a large colony of sea lions of about 200,000.
