I was on a mission to see older works of art by the best masters - Bernini, Caravaggio,Titian,Canova,Raphael,Tintoretto, and of course Michelangelo.
Michelangelo's statue of Moses - part of the tomb of Pope Julius II. Completed in 1515.
The tomb was never completed and it is a 47 foot free standing monument.
This is the largest private collection in Rome.
Valazquez's painting of Pope Innocent X is considerd the most important painting in this collection.
THE CAPITOLINI MUSEUM
The museum dates from 1471 when Pope Sixtus IV donated to the People of Rome a group of bronze statues that until then had been at the Lanteran.
The Palazzo houses the collections of ancient sculptures assembled in the past by the Roman nobility.

Housed in the former Villa Borghese Pinciana, begun by cardinal Scipione Borghese, the nephew of Pope Paul V (1605 - 1621) . He was an early collector of Bernini, Caravaggio, and Titian.
In this museum, the villa of the Livia family from the 1st Century BC is preserved with immaculate detail.
Frescos from the dining room of the Roman Villa are magnificant.
The NEMI ships from Caligula from the 1 Century AD the bronze rings from the "floating palace" were found.
Built by the Roman Emperor Constantine I it was built over the grave of St. Paul.
Even though it is not in the Vatican Proper, it is still owned by the Vatican, and under International Rule.
