Katherine and I really loved our month on the Black Sea Coast. Most of our days were spent very lazily.A typical day would be to go to the beach in Pomorie, lunch in Nessebar,or Burgas. One of our favorite stops was the car wash. Yes, the car wash!! The gas stations and the car washes here have a "social life". Yes, our car wash had a cafe, free wifi, and a complete bar menu!! For 5BLN ($3.00)we could get our car hand washed while we had a cappuccino, a strawberry daiquiri, or a cheese toast. We loved our car wash treat.
BURGAS
Burgas is the 4th largest town in Bulgaria, and the second largest on the Black Sea after Varna. The population is 200,000. Other than its Byzantine and Thracian history it is a famous area for biodiversity. Lake Burgas is in the middle of the city and it is inhabited by 250 species of birds; 61 are endangered in Bulgaria, and 9 globally. This area attracts bird watchers from all over the world. The lake is an important path in the annual migration of 20,000 (sometimes as many as 100,000) waterbirds, raptors and passerines. This migration is called the Via Pontica. It is a well known site for 240,000 pelicans, cranes and storks; 60,000 raptors, and the red footed falcons have been recorded here.
We went in to Burgas for Mass in a small church in the center of town. One evening the locals played a violin concert for us. The town is about 45 minutes from our villa.
